Even among strokes -- the number three cause of death and the number one cause of disability in the U.S. -- some are worse than others. Strokes that involve bleeding within the brain are more likely to disable and kill their victims, and are less treatable, than those that involve blocked blood vessels.

All strokes damage the brain by disrupting circulation, but strokes come in multiple varieties. Because different parts of the brain are specialized to perform specific functions, symptoms produced by strokes vary according to what part of the brain was injured. In one patient the symptom might be weakness on one side of the body. In another it might be a partial loss of vision. In still another, a loss of speech. And symptoms can vary in intensity from mild to severe according to how large the area of damage is and whether it occurred in a pivotal location.

Strokes can also vary according to another fundamental difference — whether they involve a blocked blood vessel or a hemorrhage. Most strokes are due to the former in which brain-tissue damaged by lack of circulation is called an infarction. But 10-15 of strokes involve bleeding from ruptured blood vessels within the brain tissue, and while it’s bad enough to have an infarction, hemorrhagic strokes intracerebral hemorrhages can be even more devastating.

One prominent figure with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage is Ariel Sharon, whose hemorrhagic stroke occurred while he was still prime minister of Israel. Although some patients with intracerebral hemorrhage recover to a point of being able to enjoy other people and regain some independence in functioning, Sharon’s poor clinical outcome is all too common in patients with this disease.

The additional problem with hemorrhagic strokes is that the new deposit of blood occupies space — sometimes a lot of it — and there is only so much space within the skull braincase to go around. The fresh hemorrhage crowds and distorts the brain-tissue next to it, and additionally subjects the rest of the brain to increased pressure that can itself be damaging. Because of these distortions and pressure-changes, a patient with intracerebral hemorrhage often shows a decreased level of consciousness or even coma.

Another kind of spontaneous bleed within the braincase is subarachnoid hemorrhage, often caused by ruptured aneurysms outside the brain but inside the braincase. While this, too, is a very serious condition, it is not the focus of this particular essay, and spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhages are not caused by aneurysms of this kind. Yet another kind of bleed that can be confused with primary intracerebral hemorrhage is secondary hemorrhage. This occurs in some patients who started out with infarctions of the brain but who had subsequent bleeding from fragile blood-vessels around the infarction’s edges. This kind of bleed is not quite as serious as that which occurs when the bleed is primary the initial event.

How are intracerebral hemorrhages diagnosed? Since the 1970s when computed tomographic CT scans were introduced, this imaging technique has been the most effective and sensitive tool. A fresh hemorrhage within brain tissue is dramatically evident on CT scans. And unlike infarctions that can take a day or two to show up on CT scans, hemorrhages are already visible at the earliest moment a scan can be made.

Although surgical removal of blood-clots from the surface of the brain — called subdural and epidural hematomas — can be life-saving and function-sparing, surgery for a bleed hematoma or blood-clot within the brain tissue itself is another story. Some studies comparing outcome between operated and unoperated patients with intracerebral hemorrhage showed improved outcome, on average, for operated patients, while still others showed worsened outcome. Operated or unoperated, patients had high rates of death and disability.

Because of the limited prospects for meaningful improvement, surgery for intracerebral hemorrhage is often an act of desperation. One crusty old clinician was blunt about the direness of the situation, saying, “Show me a patient with intracerebral hemorrhage whose life was saved by surgery, and I’ll show you a patient you wish you hadn’t operated on.” His point was that survivors of this operation usually show severe impairments.

However, one form of hemorrhage within brain tissue is probably a special case, and that is hemorrhage within the cerebellum, located within the bony braincase just above the nape of the neck. Surgical extraction of blood clots occurring within the cerebellum prevents excessive pressure on the nearby brainstem that handles a lot of basic and necessary functions, like breathing.

Administration of cortisol-type steroids is a nonsurgical treatment that has been studied in a scientific way, comparing treated patients to untreated patients with the same condition. The steroids didn’t help. Decreasing the patients’ blood pressures by administering medication has likewise been studied, but with the same outcome — no benefit. However, in a preliminary study one nonsurgical treatment showed promise. Intravenous administration of activated factor VII a natural component of the blood-clotting system reduced expansion of the intracerebral blood-clot, death and disability when given within four hours of the initial hemorrhage. A larger study is underway to see if this benefit holds up under further analysis.

Otherwise, what can be done acutely for this condition? Individualizing treatment seems rational, even if unproved. For example, if the patient had a bleed while taking a blood-thinner as was the case with Ariel Sharon then it makes sense to stop the blood-thinner or reverse its effects. Supportive management, like administering intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration, monitoring for irregular heartbeats and protecting the patient’s airway also make sense. If the patient can’t consume food in the usual way, feeding through tubes or intravenous lines can be considered, though this decision can be postponed until the patient’s prospects are more apparent.

Who is at risk for intracerebral hemorrhage? Neurologists at Malmo University Hospital in Malmo, Sweden, compared 147 patients with intracerebral hemorrhage with 1029 similar but stroke-free patients in order to determine risk factors. They found that hypertension high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated triglyceride levels in the bloodstream, history of psychiatric problems, smoking and surprisingly short stature were more frequent in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.

However, when it comes to modifiable risk-factors those that one can do something about a variety of studies indicate that hypertension is the single most important factor. Thus, treatment of hypertension, when present, is probably the single most effective thing that one can do in order to prevent this disease.

Most of us over the age of 30 have at some point in time suffered from hemorrhoids. They are one of the most common medical ailments suffered by both men and women. Generally 80 of those who suffer with hemorrhoids are able to treat them with over the counter preparations and a few lifestyle changes. For others who suffer with external hemorrhoids surgery may be needed.

Internal hemorrhoids are generally symptom free. The most common symptom is blood seen covering the stool or on toilet paper. It is when these internal hemorrhoids prolapse to the outside of the anus that they become extremely painful and troublesome.

Depending on the severity of your hemorrhoids you may be able to obtain relief with the following methods A sitz bath. Sit in a few inches of warm water for fifteen minutes two to three times a day. When you wipe do not use toilet paper, use a pad or cotton ball moistened with witch hazel. You can purchase pre moistened pads in the drug store. You can use an over the counter cream to help lessen the burning and itching. Do not use it over the time specified by the manufacturer.

Some hemorrhoids must be treated surgically. There are several ways this is done. The first is a rubber band ligation where a band is placed around the hemorrhoid to stop the blood flow to it. The hemorrhoid withers away within a few days. Sclerotherapy is when a chemical solution is injected to shrink the hemorrhoid. Hemorrhoidectomy, where the hemorrhoid is surgically removed is generally used in severe cases.

Other more long lasting measures to help you prevent a recurrence of hemorrhoids are to eat more fiber. Take a fiber supplement on a daily basis. Drink plenty of water to help keep your stools soft. Do not put off your urge to have a bowel movement. Do not sit for long periods of time on the toilet.

Please remember that any rectal bleeding should be evaluated by a physician.

Heart rate monitors are a great way to monitor the intensity of an exercise session. Generally the higher your heart rate is, the harder you are working. This makes sense. If you are exercising hard, your muscles are producing a lot of energy and have a high energy demand. In order to get oxygen to the working muscles to help in the production of energy, the heart must pump harder and faster. More blood circulates, transporting more oxygen to cells.

Heart rate is a good indicator of intensity.
Calculating Max Heart Rate

The general guideline given for calculating your max heart rate is 220-your age. So if you are 20 years old, 220-20, your max heart rate should be around 200 beats per minute. This is a general guideline and this is some variation in this, so don’t be concerned if you are exercising with a heart rate monitor and notice your max heart rate varies slightly to the calculation. The calculation is a guideline and not a hard and fast rule.
Heart Rate Zones

Now that you know your max heart rate you can calculate at what intensity you would like to work at. Using the 20 year old example again, with a max heart rate of 200bpm. You may want to exercise at 50-70 of 200, and 70 of your max heart rate may be the way to go. This zone can be set on your heart rate monitor. This does not burn the most kilojoules, and may not be the most effect method for weight loss, but that is a different debate.

Exercise over 85 cannot be sustained for very long.

So if you want to go for a long steady state run, your best bet is to program your heart rate for a zone lower than 85 is a good aerobic training zone.

Health Risks in Using Your Shampoo

Anyone who bathes and wants their hair cleaned uses shampoo. Some shampoos promise your long flowing hair while others make sure that your hair is glowing. These are wonderful sales talk and most people are vain enough to be drawn into it. However, only a few people know that these shampoos have ingredients that are risking their very health every time they use it.

Most people do not look at the back of ones shampoo where all different kinds of ingredients are listed.
There is various research that has shown that your everyday shampoo have various chemicals in them that could cause serious risks in your health, such as memory loss, eye irritation, skin irritation, hair loss and even cancer.

Here are the most common ingredients of a shampoo that can give you health risks and what those health risks are

1. Fragrances used in shampoo contain a number of chemicals and most of them cause headaches and rashes. Some can even induce coughing and vomiting to a person.

2. Propylene glycol causes allergies. This ingredient can also be found in your everyday toothpaste.

3. Sodium lauryl sulfate can cause asthma attacks. This ingredient also damages a persons hair follicles which can lead to hair loss for some. They are also known for irritating a persons eyes.

4. Diethanolamine can cause liver and kidney cancer. This ingredient can also be toxic to ones brain.

Maybe you are wondering how these shampoos still stay in the market even if it has been proven to cause these kinds of health risks. The regulatory authorities on these kinds of things does not investigate these claims and spends most of their time researching prescription drugs . Meanwhile, shampoos, which can readily be bought in a supermarket is forgotten and ignored.

To take it one more step further, shampoo manufacturers are, in a way, allowed to use different kinds of chemicals for their products. There are no regulations barring them to use popular chemicals which can cause cancer when exposed regularly to a persons body.

Researchers of National Institute of Health have directly found a relation between shampoos and damage in the nervous system. These researchers are concerned of possible health risks especially nervous system disorders due to continued use of certain shampoos .

This effect is due to the chemicals preventing neurons from communicating with each other, resulting in the slowing of these networks of neurons. These slowing of neurons will cause problems and prevent normal brain functions.

Another research done by scientist about these chemicals found out that there are synthetic chemicals that disrupt hormones. These chemicals, since they are used daily, never go away cause your endocrine glands to stop functioning.

The endocrine glands regulate every body function. The thyroid, pituitary, pancreas, ovaries and testes are all part of this system and all of them are linked to the brains hypothalamus. The chemicals found in shampoos are acting as endocrine disruptors and causes your body to send false signals to these glands. These false signals will cause serious problems such as memory loss, cold, flu, hair loss, low blood pressure, malnutrition, heart disease, cancer and can even cause infertility. These are just a few and do not even take into consideration other diseases they could get due to lowered body resistance.

These malfunctions of the body organs can be deadly and costly for consumers. Without knowing about it, they are the ones that put themselves in this predicament. Most people do not know about these chemicals they just keep using on their head that can cause them more harm than good.

The best way to protect ones self against these chemicals is to read all the ingredient found in their shampoos and study about them. Study the side effects these chemicals could cause your body.

There are a various risk factors that are linked to lung cancer. The most common known causes are as follows

Cigarette Smoking
Cigarette smoking is probably the most closely related link to developing lung cancer. A person who smokes two packs or more of cigarettes per day has a one in seven chance of developing lung cancer. Those that smoke one pack of cigarettes per day have a twenty-five times greater chance of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker. In addition, those people that smoke a pipe or cigar have a five times greater chance of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker.

The risk of developing lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked over your lifetime. Cigarette smoking damages the cells in your lungs. The moment you stop smoking, your lungs begin healing themselves, replacing damaged cells with healthy, normal cells. Your risk of developing lung cancer begins decreasing almost immediately when you quit smoking. Every year that you do not smoke, your chances of developing lung cancer drop further. By the fifteenth year, your chances of developing lung cancer are about the same as those of a person who has never smoked.

Secondhand Smoke
Also known as passive smoking, people exposed to secondhand smoke on a regular basis will have a higher risk of developing lung cancer, even if they do not smoke themselves. Studies have shown that those who live with a smoker have a 24 greater risk of developing lung cancer than most non-smokers. Doctors estimate that about 3000 lung cancer deaths a year are related to secondhand smoke.

Asbestos Exposure
Exposure to asbestos is another well-known cause of lung cancer and mesothelioma – cancer of the pleural lining of the lungs. Asbestos was widely used in construction and everyday products in the late 1800s through the 1960s. Asbestos separates into fine silica fibers that become trapped in the tissues of the lungs. Mesothelioma is inextricably linked to asbestos exposure. There are no reported cases of mesothelioma in people who were not exposed to asbestos either in the workplace or through their environment. A non-smoker who was exposed to asbestos has a five times greater risk of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker who was not exposed. Smoking increases the risk dramatically – a smoker who was exposed to asbestos has a risk of developing lung cancer that is 50 to 90 times greater than that of a non-smoker.

Radon Gas
It is estimated that about 12 of lung cancer deaths can be attributed to radon gas, a colorless, odorless gas that is a natural byproduct of the decay of uranium. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as many as 15 of homes in the United States have unsafe levels of radon gas, which will account for 15,000 to 22,000 deaths from lung cancer annually.

Air Pollution
Scientists estimate that as many as 1 of all lung cancer deaths are attributable to air pollution. They believe that prolonged exposure to very polluted air can raise the risks of developing lung cancer to about the levels of a passive smoker.

Raw food has become very popular these days and for some very good reasons. I will attend several of them in this article. Raw food is a vegetarian food which is not baked, cooked or heated over 48 Celsius, about 120 Fahrenheit, degrees. Raw food can be categorized into four main groups vegetables and fruits, sprouts of all kinds, dehydrated breads and fruits, and fermented food with friendly germs. In this article I will discuss how one should start to consume raw food for healthy raw food diet.

It is a known fact that since 1500 BC famous people consumed raw food among them you can find Leonardo de Vinci, Russo, Hippocrates, Tolstoy, and many more. Today many famous people follow their footsteps and consume raw food as a healthier way of life and maintaining great appearance as a bonus.

Before we start consuming raw food we need to better understand the biggest advantage in eating living food. In one word Enzymes. When the food is heated over 48 degrees all enzymes died and we loose their blessed work. Enzymes are created by our body to support it in some of the most crucial tasks our body performs. They help in adjusting the food and consume less food but enjoy better feeding. Unlike heavy cooked food which is less nutritious.

One of the most important side affects of consuming raw food is maintaining balanced body weight. This is not the subject of this article but over weight problems are well known blood pressure, heart disease, etc. We can benefit from the following if we keep in normal weight improved immunity system, better night sleep, higher energy, and better digestion system, avoid skin disease, less fat in your blood, and live longer.

Another important element is consuming the correct blend of foods without mixing wrong types of foods. It is important to avoid mixing of vegetables and fruits, sweet fruits and sour fruits, fat and fruits. The reason is that every food group is digested by a different enzyme. The mixing could relate to a swollen stomach and unpleasant heavy feeling and an urge to take a nap while you have just eaten and should feel a live and energetic.

I hope that by now you are convinced that consuming raw food could change your life for the better. But how should you start consuming raw food? Here are few quick tips on how should you start to change your diet
Instead of taking foods out, start with adding raw foods to your diet.
Drink only natural squeezed juices. Especially green juice made from celery, cucumber, and green leafs. Try cucumber, celery, green leafs, some ginger, and of lemon.
Start your lunch and dinner with a big salad. Add nuts and seeds.
Start eating nuts, almonds, and seeds as snacks. Or some fruit.
Start to remove slowly processed food. At start 20 percent raw and 80 percent not and slowly change the relation.

Please note that in time when you start consuming only raw food your body will start to clean all toxics and it could be accompanied by bad breath, gazes, etc. This is normal and a sign that your body is getting one step closer to a healthy clean state.

Please consult your doctor before performing any change to your diet to make sure your diet fits your medical condition.

First showers of monsoon are heartily welcomed by everyone after experiencing the scorching heat of summer. But monsoons reduce the immunity of our body and make us susceptible to many diseases which are commonly associated with this season. It is time for us to keep our body resistant against diseases by boosting our immunity and taking precautions against these diseases.

The diseases associated with monsoon are malaria, jaundice, gastro intestinal infections like typhoid and cholera. Apart from these, viral infections like cold and cough also make their presence felt.

Puddles of water formed due to rain become breeding grounds for mosquitoes which spread diseases like malaria and dengue fever. As a precautionary measure against mosquito bite born diseases one can use mosquito net around the bed which is better choice to mosquito repellants like mats and coils. A mosquito repellant cream is the best choice when you are away from home. Fumigating the house with smoke of dried neem leaves in evenings for 1-2 minutes is an excellent ayurvedic method to keep mosquitoes away.

Pollution of drinking water during monsoon is very common. It is very necessary to drink clean and pure water when water borne monsoon diseases like diarrhea and gastro intestinal infections threaten us. Drinking boiled water at home is strongly recommended to tap water. Prefer mineral water of government certified companies when you are away from home.

Walking in dirty water during rainy season leads to numerous fungal infections which affect toes and nails. Diabetic patients have to take a special care about their feet. Always keep your feet dry and clean. Avoid walking in dirty water. Keep your shoes, socks and raincoats dry and clean. Drying clothes with fumes of loban and dry neem leaves is recommended in ayurvedic texts.

Precautions have to be taken to prevent dampness and growth of fungus mold on and around the house where asthmatic patients live. Avoid fumigation in case of asthmatic patients.

Ayurvedic Tips to increase body immunity and preventing diseases of monsoon.

1.	The digestive system gets weakened due to dehydration in summer. This leads to low digestive power. This is further weakened by vitiation of doshas and dhatus due to monsoon. Hence following diets which increase power of digestion and strengthen the digestive system would be beneficial in rainy season.
Light foods prepared out of old barley, rice and wheat.
Sour and salted soups of vegetables.
Drinking boiled and cooled water mixed with little honey.
Consuming little quantity of wine prepared out of grapes.
Adding ginger and green gram in daily diet.
Eating warm food.

2.	Avoid the following
Sleeping in daytime.
Over physical exertion.
Over exposure to sun.

3.	Always keep the surrounding dry and clean. Do not allow water to get accumulated around.

4.	Keep your body warm as viruses attack immediately when body temperature goes down.

5.	Do not enter air conditioned room with wet hair and damp cloths.

6.	Dry your feet and webs with soft dry cloth whenever they are wet.
7.	Wash vegetables with clean water and steam them well to kill germs.
8.	Avoid eating uncooked foods and salads.
9.	Drink plenty of water and keep your body well hydrated.
10.	Do not allow kids to play in stagnant polluted water filled puddles.

Ayurvedic Home remedies for Monsoon diseases

1.	Apply castor oil or sesame oil for cracked feet and skin.
2.	A freshly prepared paste of turmeric, neem and sesame seeds is recommended in ayurveda for fungal infection between toes.
3.	Drink a glass of warm water mixed with a tea spoon of honey in empty stomach. This flushes out accumulated toxins.
4.	Freshly prepared radish juice is the best remedy for cold.
5.	A pinch each of long pepper powder and rock salt mixed in warm water reduces cough
6.	The following home recipes can be used as home remedies for digestive disorders of monsoon

In Indigestion
Ingredients
Rice-12 cup
Water -4 cups
Long pepper- 2or 3
Ginger -1
Method of preparation
Cook rice with recommended quantity of water with crushed ginger and salt. Powder long pepper and fry it in a spoon of cows ghee and add it to gruel. Consume this when it hot. This is very light to digest and relieves colic pain.

In Diarrhea
Ingredients
Rice -12 cup
Water 4 cups
Ginger paste 12 spoon
Salt to taste
Pomegranate juice cup
Method of preparation
1.	Cook rice with recommended quantity of water with ginger paste and salt
2.	Add pomegranate juice when the gruel is warm. This gruel rehydrates body and supply energy . This soothes inflamed walls of intestine and controls bowel movements.

In flatulence
Ingredients
cup of rice
4 cups of water
Haritaki Terminalia chebula – powder-12 spoon
Roots of pippali or long pepper
Ginger paste -12 spoon salt to taste
Method of preparation
Cook Rice, haritaki powder , roots of pippali and water together. Add salt to it.Consume this when it is warm. This relieves flatulence and regularizes the bowel movement

Thus precautions coupled with care really help you to enjoy monsoon. Have a healthy and safe monsoon.

Most surgical patients dont know that before their operation begins, a laborious process called an instrument count is down. This procedure includes counting each piece of sterile equipment that will be used during the procedure. The count must be done by a registered nurse and the sterile nurse or scrub nurse. In some jurisdictions, a scrub nurse can be unlicensed personnel called a scrub technician.

As each tray of instruments is opened unto the sterile field, the two nurses will compare the contents with a paper sheet which comes with the tray. Each and every piece within the tray will be counted.

All sterile supplies are counted. This includes sponges, which are usually wrapped together in groups of five or ten. Sponges can be large gauze bundles, or 4X 8 rectangles of gauze. Also, small gauze pieces which are bound together into a peanut shape and called peanuts are counted. Larger balls of cotton stuffed gauze pillows are counted. Sutures are counted and divided by types. Needles without sutures, or free needles, are counted separately. All of these supplies are possible foreign objects that can be left behind in a body cavity.

There is a debate about which surgeries are at risk for lost objects. In most states, the standard is to count instruments, sponges and sutures when a body cavity is opened. A cavity would be the head, abdomen or chest. There is also a risk for left behind sponges in some gynecological surgery where instruments are inserted into the uterus. So sponges and needles are counted for those surgeries.

Major, but minimally invasive surgeries, such as laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic nissen fundalpication, laparoscopic nephrectomy, or laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy are surgeries in which multiple, small puncture wounds are made in which specially designed sheaths are inserted and then the scope and instruments access the cavity through the sheaths. Except for thoracic endoscopic surgeries, utilizing a scope requires the body cavity to be expanded in some way. Laparoscopic surgeries use carbon dioxide gas, arthroscopic, genitourinary and gynecological surgeries use fluid. The sheaths prevent the
gases or fluids from escaping from the cavity.

Technically, it is hard to imagine how anything could be left behind in a surgery done with a scope. However, small screws, jaws to graspers, and parts of staple guns have all been left behind in patients, require additional surgeries and time and money lost. Ultimately it is the responsibility of the surgeon to know if the instrument he pulls out of a patient is complete, but part of the team mentality is that the nurses must also know the construction of an instrument so that if something is missing, it can be accounted for.

An example of this is something that I experienced; I was scrubbed on a back surgery and one of the bone instruments I gave the doctor was missing a screw. It didnt affect its operation, but I didnt know if it was missing before I gave it to the doctor or not. It required an xray during the surgery to see if the screw was somewhere within the patients back incision. It was not.

The web sites below, have much more information on these subjects…

We all heard of Absestos and the horrible consequences it has in our health. Asbestosis is “a form of lung disease pneumoconiosis” which causes interstitial fibrosis or scarring of the lungs.

Asbestosis is progressive and, for the most part, irreversible. Respiratory impairment worsens with time, even if exposure to asbestos has ceased. Asbestosis is usually found in asbestos workers and not in the general public. People with asbestosis have shortness of breath, often along with a cough. Asbestos cretes Mesothelioma, and Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which affects mesothelial tissue in the lungs, peritoneum or pericardium.

The biggest concern mesothelioma is that can arise both from visceral and parietal peritoneum. It is diagnosed in advanced stages in most cases, and it often takes considerable time to arrive at the correct diagnosis, as the mean symptoms-to-diagnosis time reported is 122 days. The most frequently reported initial symptoms are abdominal pain 35, anorexia, marked weight loss, and ascites ; less frequently night sweats and hypercoagulability. Clinical presentation with fever of unknown origin, intestinal obstruction, or surgical emergency due to acute inflammatory lesions have been reported. Mesothelioma cancer of the mesothelium is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Mesothelioma treatment if mesothelioma attorneys texas.

Mesothelioma is defined as an ICD-O histology code of 9050-9053. Data are presented for a five-year time period. Mesothelioma cell viability was decreased in a dose-dependent manner by lovastatin 5 to 30 microM. These effects were not reversed by exogenous growth factors or cholesterol, but were reversed by addition of doses of micro mevalonate, confirming that lovastatin affected mesothelioma viability by inhibiting mevalonate synthesis. This is based on the fact that Mesothelioma is a cancer of the thin lining surrounding the lung and this disease is almost always fatal, often within a few months of diagnosis.

The scary part about this ilness, is that mesothelioma has a much longer latency period compared with lung cancer 40 years versus 15-20 years, and mesothelioma is therefore likely to be found among workers who were first exposed to asbestos at an early age. Mesothelioma is always fatal. Mesothelioma has also been found in individuals who were exposed to asbestos only once decades earlier. The only known cause of mesothelioma is asbestos. Mesothelioma has a much longer latency period compared with lung cancer 40 years versus 15-20 years, and mesothelioma is therefore more likely to be found among workers who were first exposed to asbestos at an early age. Mesothelioma is always fatal.

Exposure to asbestos has also been associated with an increased incidence of esophageal, kidney, laryngeal, pharyngeal, and buccal cavity cancers. As with other known chronic occupational diseases, disease associated with asbestos generally appears about twenty years following the first occurrence of exposure There are no known acute effects associated with exposure to asbestos. Exposure to ozone for several hours at relatively low concentrations has been found to significantly reduce lung function and induce respiratory inflammation in normal, healthy people during exercise. This decrease in lung function generally is accompanied by symptoms including chest pain, coughing, sneezing, and pulmonary congestion. Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke ETS is a significant cause of lung cancers in people who themselves do not use tobacco. Between 3000 and 6000 lung cancer deaths per year in the United States are caused by exposure to ETS.
