The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon Goes Ahead

Tags: , , , , ,

The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon appeared to be in jeopordy last month when Jerry underwent heart surgery. However, the popular entertainer and charity worker has recovered from the operation and is back working on the telethon event on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon is as much a part of the Labor Day Weekend as the beach and a barbeque. For over 40 years, Jerry Lewis has gone on television along with other celebrities and appealed to the audiences to make pledges for the children who are victims of muscular dystrophy. Shortly after the telethon began in 1966, everyone referred to them as Jerrys Kids, and in the months preceding the telethon, many stores still have the cans out for everyone to help Jerrys Kids.

What began as a 16-hour appeal that raised 1 million in its first year is now an old day event that raised 60 million in 2004. Neither Mr. Lewis nor any of the other volunteers, celebrities included, receive any money for their tireless efforts. It is unknown why Mr. Lewis is such an advocate for the Muscular Dystrophy Association because he has never spoken about it other than to say the kids are what matters. In addition, today the efforts are also presented across the Internet where even more people can participate in this once a year fund raising effort.

For over four decades, people all across the nation have pledged millions off dollars to aid in research and programs for the victims of muscular dystrophy. With the inclusion of the Internet into the fund raising efforts during the Labor Day weekend, one can only imagine how much farther these efforts will reach. Instead of a national effort, the Internet makes it possible for an international appeal to reach people all over the world who want to make pledges to the worthwhile organization.

For anyone who is home or close to a television set on Labor Day weekend, it is certainly worth the time to take a few minutes to tune in and see the efforts that are being made in this direction. Make it a part of your Labor Day weekend just as it has become an icon of everyone in the world. One cannot help but be impressed with the work that is done by all of the volunteers.

Help For Children Who Are Depressed

Are you the parent of a child who is often depressed? Are you a child who often feels down in the dumps and depressed? This article offers advice for both parents, other family members and children about how to deal with, reduce and even eradicate this depression.

I remember from my own childhood having many periods when I was very unhappy and sad. I was the type of person who would let aspects from my life get on top of me which would at times affect my sleep patterns. I found growing up through childhood, into a teenager and ultimately into my adulthood as one big choir and struggle. I was forever comparing my own life to that of my brother, sister and friends. Their lives seemed so much easier than what mine was and this made me feel quite jealous of them.

Looking back one of my faults was that I was not willing to discuss my worries and fears with my parents and basically kept them bottled up inside of me. This meant of course that I had to deal with each and every issue problem on my own without any outside help or advice. I wish that I had been more open with my family as I think my life would have been that much happier if I had.

I am now a parent of two children myself and am always looking out for them. I try and gage how they are coping with life and if I feel that they are in an unhappy period or mood, I then attempt to find out what is causing this by trying to talk to them. They are not always happy to discuss these issues but I then make sure that they understand that I will be here for them when they are ready to open up. I talk to them about my own childhood and about the mistakes I feel that I made by keeping my own worries to myself.

I want my children to realise that they can talk to me about any aspect of their life and that I will be here to help and not judge them. Life in general, with school as an example, can at times be quite tough, with things such as bullying affecting a lot of children. There is the added pressure of examinations and also trying to establish ones self within a group of friends. Moving schools and going through all of the bodily changes can also be quite uncomfortable for many children.

As a family we try to make our childrens home life as enjoyable and relaxed as possible. This includes many family days out and where financially possible, a family holiday abroad in the summer.

My advice to any parent who has an unhappy or often depressed child would be to be very patient with them through these periods. I, as I have already stated would try and get them to talk about what is making them feel in this way and if they do not want to talk, would let them know that I am there for them if they do ever want a chat etc.

My advice for a child who is feeling depressed would be to talk to your family, a friend or a teacher. They say that a problem shared is a problem halved and I really believe in this statement. You do not have to be alone in this world and the advice that you are given could be of huge benefit to you. Despite what you might think all children have problems and worry about many different aspects of their own life. Your parents were of course children many moons ago and may have experience in the issues which you are not happy about. Do not make the same mistakes that I did by keeping these problems to yourself as it does not help to reduce your fears or depression.

Keeping Your Family Healthy

Obesity is one of the biggest problems in the United States today and many families don’t follow regular exercise programs. It is often said that the family that plays together, stays together. This couldn’t be more true in the case of family fitness. Getting your family off the sofa and encouraging them to get moving can be a simple task.

Pay attention to what everyone in the family likes to do. If your sons and your husband like football, suggest a weekend excursion to the park for a game of flag football. If your daughter is an avid jogger, head to the trails. Even if your kids are more into video games than outside play, consider looking “dance pad” games that can be used on popular game consoles, which have been suggested to help in the weight loss process. This brings a whole new meaning to playing video games, and can actually be fun for you too. It’s not exercise, it’s play!

Your family’s fitness not only means exercise, but a change in the kitchen as well. It is time to throw out the chips and cookies and make healthy alternative choices. Snacks such as carrot and celery sticks, apples, seedless grapes, pretzels, air popped popcorn, and graham crackers make excellent choices. If available, your children will grab these snacks without a second thought. Fill your cabinets with these healthier snacks and you might find yourself surprised that your family doesn’t even notice the difference! Replacing sodas with bottled water and organic fruit juices while you’re at it can help your cause. Don’t buy diet sodas – they’re loaded with sodium!

Subtle changes in your family’s eating habits can have long lasting effects. It is never too late to make a healthy change for you and your family. But be discreet! If you tell your children that you’re making a change to the family eating habits, they are less likely to accept it, rather than not even questioning the change when grabbing a snack.

Taking care of your family is important, and family fitness is the way to do that. You are your children’s greatest example. If you follow a steady, healthy pattern, your children are just as likely to continue this pattern once they are on their own. Just don’t forget to make the habit fun! Everyone is far more likely to be eager and accepting of the change if it is fun.
