Staying Away A Little Info On Avoidant Personality Disorder

Tags: , , , , ,

Every so often, people can end up feeling more than just a light touch of performance or social anxiety. This is perfectly natural for us, because being put into situations where we feel we have little to no control at all is one of those things that kicks in our fight-or-flight response. However, this is only acceptable to a certain degree, as there are situations where people are expected to behave normally, even when faced with a little apprehension. One of these situations is when people are around others, such as social gatherings and business meetings. For people that avoid all forms of social contact, the problem may be less a case of social anxiety and more a case of avoidant personality disorder.

APD is one of those mental health concerns that are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, but can wreak tremendous havoc on relationships both personal and professional. They tend to be presented as loners, shunning most forms of social contact with others unless they feel that they have absolutely no other choice. This can potentially lead them into dangerous situations if they do not exercise caution, or if the APD is mixed with some other personality traits. A typical sign of APD is the desire to avoid social contact and being inept or awkward during social situations. They also tend to feel a detachment from society in general, sometimes seeing separation and discrimination that aren’t actually there.

The cause of APD is not entirely clear at the moment, though some have pointed out genetics, trauma during social situations, and a poor relationship with one’s social environment as being possible causes. There are some that theorize that genetics and hereditary personality traits are more likely to cause this particular mental health condition than other factors. It is believed that certain mental health characteristics inherited from one’s parents can make a person more susceptible to APD, or more likely to develop it as a side effect of some other psychological disorder. Trauma, particularly the type that occurs during the formative years and the period when personalities are still developing, can also stunt a person’s ability to adapt to social situations enough to become a problem. However, none of these theories have managed to put forward adequate solid evidence to be seen as the most likely cause.

There are also several signs that could point someone as having APD, or is developing the condition. Among them is investment in a fixed fantasy, a self-delusion made of a consistent set of beliefs and perceptions that cannot be verified in reality. A sense of inferiority to others, even when told and presented with definitive proof otherwise, also manifests as a sign of APD. In connection to this, people with APD do not respond well to criticism and judgment, occasionally taking it all as an attack on their person and not on the merits of their work. An interpersonal relationship with someone with APD is highly unlikely, as these people attempt to avoid them whenever possible.

Having APD, however, is not a problem of apocalyptic proportions. Therapy and counseling, particularly in groups, can often help alleviate the problem and aid people in adjusting. Currently, psychoactive medication is not commonly used except to handle potential complications.

The Common Treatments for Acne

The skin is often looked at by people as an outward sign of a person’s hygiene and health. Subconsciously, human beings tend to associate smooth, clear skin with being in good physical condition. Good skin is also perceived as one of the most obvious signs of physical beauty.

The preoccupation with skin care has led to a boom in the skin care product industry. These skin care products are marketed to cater to the large market that demands a variety of preparations to treat dry skin, control oily skin, and even to reverse the aging process. Today, manufacturers of beauty products have expanded their beauty line to include concoctions to cure skin infections. The products that are usually bought to control skin infections usually include those that are supposed to treat adult acne acne rosacea and teenage acne acne vulgaris. Adult acne and teenage acne are two entirely different things, though most scientists believe the root causes are essentially the same. There are currently no concrete findings on what the ultimate cause of acne is, though most studies point to bacteria being the most prevalent factor in both rosacea and vulgaris problems. The single, definitive cause has yet to be found but the countless studies have shown the medical world that there are a number of possible solutions to both acne rosacea and acne vulgaris. These treatments promise to help alleviate the problem of acne, as well as alleviate the social anxiety that people with severe cases of acne experience.

Skin infections like acne rosacea and teenage acne are typically caused by bacterial infections in the skin. Among the many core ingredients of the medications used to treat acne and similar bacterial infections is benzoyl peroxide. In the case of acne, benzoyl peroxide works by attacking the bacteria, effectively attempting to cut off the acne at the source. However, benzoyl peroxide is a potent compound and people with sensitive skin can develop redness, rashes, and other side effects that can add to one’s social anxiety, rather than help relieve it. Medically speaking, adults often find it harder to tolerate benzoyl peroxide, as compared to teenagers. An alternative for acne medication and the subsequent relief from social anxiety can come in the form of treatments that make use of salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid works on acne in a different manner from benzoyl peroxide. While the peroxide compound works by targeting the bacterial infections behind acne, salicylic acid functions as an exfoliant. The acid works by peeling away layers of the skin, subsequently also peeling away the acne gradually. The acid is considered to be milder than the peroxide, though it can still have side effects. Additionally, salicylic acid is not as effective an acne treatment option as benzoyl peroxide, simply because it lacks the raw chemical potency of the peroxide.

There are some dermatologists that suggest combination treatments as a way to relieve acne. The approach works by having people apply salicylic acid during the day time, as it is the compound that has a lower chance of inducing side effects. The benzoyl peroxide is then applied at night, before sleeping. This reduces the chances that the side effects would interfere with the patient’s daily life, as well as reduce the chances of the peroxide bleaching clothing.

In your typical pharmacy, there are various treatments for acne and other skin infections, and not all of them will contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. That doesn’t mean that they don’t work as well, it’s just that they probably work differently from the aforementioned types of treatments. Whether one decides to take an over-the-counter treatment or go for a prescription, the important thing to remember is that once the acne has been effectively removed, then working on relieving the social anxiety can begin.

“Breaking Point The Factors Behind Insanity”

What can drive someone to insanity? Certainly, insanity is something that is commonly understood or misunderstood and usually carries some sort of stigma in the popular consciousness. If you believe in modern psychology and psychiatry, there are literally thousands of forms of insanity that a person can end up developing over a lifetime. Some of them, like depression, are temporary, while others, like social anxiety, require more work for a person to get through. However, there appears to be some commonality as to what actually brings about most of the forms of insanity that people go through. Which brings the question to bear is there a common, underlying trigger that compromises the stability of a person’s mental health?

Things like stress and anxiety are often cited, as most of the common and several uncommon mental health issues are triggered by one of the two. Continued exposure to stress can eventually push someone beyond their breaking point, with the form of insanity afterwards being affected by external factors. This is often a long, strenuous process because most people have some level of resistance to such things, allowing them to at least survive the stressful period with their sanity intact. Additionally, the process may not even really result in insanity, with most of the population serving as proof of this theory. Prolonged stress can affect a person’s behavior and outlook, but it is also known that several other factors can increase or reduce the impact of this. In some cases, stress and anxiety can merely even have the opposite effect, depending on the person’s personal outlook.

Emotions are also said to play a critical role in driving or pushing people into insanity, with feelings being so closely tied to mental health. A person’s emotional state can often be a reflection of a person’s relative state of mental stability, but may also become an effect of fractured sanity. There is no doubting that emotions can disrupt and affect a person’s thought processes and make them do things that they normally would not do. It has also been noted that extremely emotional situations and heavy emotional trauma can permanently affect a person’s mind, often resulting in a condition that requires therapy to eventually overcome. However, it is rather arguable that emotions are merely augmenting the effects of stress and pressure, not a factor in itself.

Trauma is also frequently cited as having drastic effects on a person’s sanity, particularly if it occurs during the formative years. The extreme psychological and emotional impact that trauma victims have to endure can often force some past the breaking point, having permanent effects on their mental health. However, it should be noted that trauma tends to be little more than a combination of stressful and emotional factors, usually mixed in with extreme circumstances. The vulnerability of the person’s psyche plays a larger role here than in other potential causes of insanity, which explains why trauma encountered later on in life does not have the same general effect as similar events encountered during childhood.

Ultimately, insanity is something that, like sanity, must be defined on an individual basis. What is sane for one person in a given society may not be considered such by a different person within the same society. Insanity is a matter of context in this case, which is the assumption that some psychological texts make.

The Point Of No Return The Roots Of Workplace Violence

Social anxiety is an ever-increasing problem, especially with Internet technology making it easier and easier to talk to someone that you’ll likely never, ever see face-to-face. This has resulted in people that are better adjusted to social situations where they will not be hindered by their social anxiety. While social anxiety is a major problem, particularly because quite a bit of professional success in today’s world requires a bit of social adaptation, most people don’t really worry about social anxiety as long as it doesn’t give the family status anxiety.

The Japanese, probably due to cultural differences, tend to draw their social anxiety inwards. This is best exemplified by the otaku and hikikomori phenomenon there, though these conditions have started to manifest in societies outside of the Far East. This can be interpreted to mean that more and more people are withdrawing socially, as society and modern civilization puts more and more pressure on them. After all, even if they are engaging in socially deviant behavior, they’re not really harming anyone but themselves. For most people, as long as those with social anxiety are not capable of doing any harm to anyone, then they can either just be ignored or be bullied by their social superiors.

However, what happens when that social anxiety builds, the stress compounds, and it has no other place to go but out? In theory, social anxiety alone is not going to result in someone lashing out violently, but it can play a major role in such an event.

Take the Columbine School Shooting, as perpetrated by Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. The two of them were reported to have been socially ostracized and made fun of by their more sociable peers. While certainly not the only factor that served as motivation for their bloody assault on their fellow students, the fact that they intended to target their social tormentors is a telling sign of just how big a factor their social status in the school was. The sheer violence of their act has sometimes been interpreted as a reaction to the unfair treatment that they received in comparison to the jocks of the school. The fact that their lack of athletic ability, their introverted personalities, and their attempts to seek help from school administrators to stop the bullying were ignored likely just aggravated them. In fact, despite the incident, there are reports that the same bullies who pushed Klebold and Harris over the edge are still continuing their bullying ways, with school authorities turning a blind eye to the infractions of their star players.

Stress and anxiety can also play a factor when someone lashes out violently against the people around them. Dealing with bureaucracy in the workplace, problems at home, or even just a really bad day at work can cause someone to snap, find the nearest available weapon, and start trying to kill the people around him. This can be made worse by social anxiety, as this condition prevents him from truly connecting to people and forming meaningful relationships, which can help alleviate a person’s stress and worries. Without any means of alleviating their stress and anxiety, disgruntled employees can just show up one day with a submachine gun in hand and start killing the people that they work with each day. Some say this lethal concoction of factors led to Patrick Sherrill to shoot several co-workers in the US Postal Service before shooting himself back in 1986.

No one is safe from the dangers of someone whose mind can no longer take the pressure and lashes out violently. There are some jobs and cultures where such acts are less likely to occur, but there will always be that small chance. There is no definite formula to see if a particular employee will snap or if a certain company is more likely to experience such violence. The fact is, the very specific and snap nature of such events can make it nearly impossible to detect the people likely to do this. For school shootings, the events have a tendency to be planned ahead by the perpetrators, but there is no such warning sign for the office environment. Often, the stress and anxiety just builds to a level where the only way to relieve it, in the person’s mind, is to commit extreme violence.

Social Anxiety in the US and Japan

Social anxiety, in many ways, is a global problem. Sure, different cultures approach people with this sort of problem in different ways, but people who dislike social contact can be found in any society. However, in recent times, two particular societies have produced interesting environments for those dealing with social anxiety.

First is the US, which has a cultural preference for the loud, the boisterous, and the extroverted traits which almost never manifests in people who have social anxiety. On the other hand, we have Japan, where social interaction and duty are too often one and the same. Social anxiety is a pervasive thing in Japan, which has an entire vocabulary dedicated to describing various manifestations of social anxiety. Both societies involved are competitive, capitalist models, but there are differences in the components of the culture that make the reactions of people to the pressures of societal duties drastically different.

American culture and society has always been biased towards those who show outward signs of skill and talent, even though there are several who have talent but are not so open about it. The people that get ahead in life are the ones that are open, extroverted, and socially adept. In contrast, the talented people that have social anxiety are left behind in the dust, often stuck in the same position for years on end, ignored and denied a promotion simply because of lack of social skills.

Americans equate social standing and success on the same level, such that those who are skilled and can socialize well are more likely to succeed. People with social anxiety, introverted and quiet by nature, tend to be ignored because they fail to advertise their talents and achievements as much as their extroverted, socially adapted counterparts do. In some cases, this has caused a degree of resentment in people and has resulted in some negative consequences. This is particularly true at the high school and collegiate levels, where student cliques tend to be vicious in persecuting those who do not fit the norm. In a worst-case scenario, these might lead those with social anxiety to commit acts similar to the Columbine school shooting incident.

In Japan, however, things are a little more complicated. Japanese culture is as different from American culture as apples are to broadswords. The Japanese language has a variety of words describing different types of personalities that, arguably, can be classified under the term social anxiety.

Perhaps the most popular is the term otaku, which is a negative term describing someone who has become obsessed with a specific hobby. While not necessarily socially inept, people who are labeled as otaku do tend to have trouble in social situations and a large percentage of them are found to have social anxiety in the Western sense. In theory, the obsession is their way of compensating for their inability to deal with the paradoxes and difficulties of Japanese society. The most common obsessions are on anime and manga, which are treated with more respect and seriousness compared to Western cartoons and comics.

Another term is hikikomori, which is sometimes considered to be similar to otaku, but denotes a different way of dealing with social anxiety. Whereas otaku compensate for their social anxiety by obsessing over a hobby, hikikomori would rather become isolated and totally avoid any social interaction. Hikikomori withdraw from all social interaction, including that which involves one’s house mates or family members. Extended periods of isolation, in some cases, reaching as long as six months, have caused serious concerns among families of the hikikomori as well health authorities.

The problem of social anxiety may yet become another malaise that would cost millions in terms of spending for psychiatric care and therapy. Even worse, this social problem may actually take a deadly toll on more people who struggle with something as normal as relating to a fellow human being.
